In September of 2006, OMG Kokkola Chemicals Oy handed over the responsibility of its routine IT infrastructure operations to Fujitsu. The Patja service fulfils the international standards and thus meets the requirements of the listed American company and establishes an environment for developing its IT operations.
ArtoErvasti, who is responsible for the IT functions at OMG Kokkola Chemicals, gives Fujitsu's Patja service the grade "good". That is not excellent, but not weak either. The grade is based on user satisfaction surveys: the employees have been able to express their opinions on the service they've used for a little over a year now. The executives, who made the decision on adopting the Patja service, evaluated the functionality of the service, too. Abiding by regulations OMG Finland opted for the Patja service, because Fujitsu adheres to the international standards.
An American, internationally operating company is bound by strict regulations. Finland also complies with the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX), composed a few years ago in the aftermath of the American financial scandals, such as Enron. ”These paragraphs apply to IT functions, too. They dictate as to how things should be handled to avoid unclear cases. With Patja, we are better equipped to meet the challenges posed by SOX,” Ervasti says. In practice the regulations dictate, for example, that IT matters cannot be handed over to only one person. Being able to leave all the routine IT activities to Fujitsu has allowed Ervasti and the other IT expert in the company to focus on developing the operations. Patja facilitates planning by producing useful reports and metrics. Ervasti literally felt the benefits brought by outsourcing last summer, when, for the first time in years, he was able to spend a full-length and uninterrupted summer holiday. Meanwhile, Fujitsu took care of all the IT problems. Expansion plans for Patja The Patja service covers some 300 desktops and about 15 servers of Kokkola Chemicals Oy. The service has later on expanded from IT infrastructure to process automation and laboratory desktops. ”We are also buying consulting services from Fujitsu for process automation and the maintenance of the special workstations in our labs, and we also got our new desktops through Fujitsu,” Ervasti says. At present, OMG is mapping out the possibility to expand the Patja service to its other offices in Europe.
